With no bulkhead mods and a flat front you will not fit your ST 170 or any other later inline 4 cylinder, sorry to be harsh but it's true

Isn't PK on here fitting a ZETEC into his van(although manual),the conversion he is doing sounds similar to what's proposed here,he has put a bullnose on his for his taste,in thread think it says could of remained flat front. First mk1 I owned, after selling it saw it about two years later on on eBay running a zetec still had flat front(was a swb camper),it's been done but never seen an auto one, also had been retro fitted a bike carb conversion(assume to simplify wiring and ecu fitment),as Sleepy said retro ford seems to ring a bell from the ad for the van I sold on,also remember ad saying that front beam had been modded to fit /clear engine, but obviously each conversion is pretty much unique to each build. Dont know if I had had any bulkhead mods.

Hi muttleymk2 I read somewhere that to fit the zetec into MK1 you needed 480mm and I have measured 490mm from face of bell housing to face of radiator If i needed to bring it forward I could put split radiators in on both LHS & RHS to allow it to come forward This I think I could manage and means |I keep the flat front and no bulkhead mods Bullsintransit, thanks for the info and I will try and find the posts from PK to see how he got on and what he needed to do (is PK his username?) As you say the differences are that he has a manual box and I want an auto box Retro ford do have Duratec to Type 9 bell housing, so I will give them a shout to see if they know of anything that will do the job
Thanks everyone
Paul

I have fitted Pintos into flat fronts and its a tight squeeze. You will have to relieve the bulkhead at the rear if you dont want the cam cover banging away on it, the bellhousing will foul in this area too especially an auto. If you end up with an adaptor plate then things bet even tighter. Anything is possible but be ready to do a lot of mods

Do any modern vehicles run a V4 engine? Is there room to squeeze a V6 into a mk1 engine bay?

Do any modern vehicles run a V4 engine? Is there room to squeeze a V6 into a mk1 engine bay? Pondered that one myself, the only lump I could come up with with a similar configuration to the V4 would be a Suburu flat 4, the only other production V4 was the Lancia engine in the Fulvia era,1.3/1.6,not really good for a Transit,Scooby coversion would be 'interesting" ,there putting them in air cooled dubs now,but they had a flat 4 to start with.d ont know if size wise(length/width) it would fit. There is a firm in the states that started making a big cc v4 for bikes, but silly money, same as there's a Saab guy in the states that does exchange v4 colonge lumps with 110 bhp upwards,no need to convert just need a bigger mortgage!

one of these will bolt straight in,just have to find a breaking factory spec rally Saab 96,Saab won two rally championships with this Ford engine in the early 70s,would of been alongside BDA engined Escort mk1s,Ford couldn't loose.(must of been pissed off to be beaten by their cast off lump in an older designed car though) Pic

What about the little Mazda 2lt V6. It's a very small compact unit & being Mazda would probably be Ford compatable.

Or if a zetec fits, would the V5 rs focus(Volvo) lump go?It would be half a cylinder shorter than a v6,but money would make prohibitive, nice dreaming though.

Pretty sure it uses the Duratec/ Mazda bolt pattern, so it's different to everything else, that said hooked upto an auto it would probably work quite well if it wasn't fully loaded all the time.

Duratec V6 might fit. Mondeo version is very short, and being all alloy is very light. Revised version was fitted to Jaguar in RWD configuration. Electronics might be difficult though. Duratec V6 is a better engine, but I think Cosworth Scorpio would be much easier solution.
