I used the RAC once... And never again. Got cover for my daughter as a family member. She broke down in the middle of a country lane with her 6 month old baby on board, as well as my old mum who is disabled, so this should have been a double priority call. It took them 3 hours to come, claiming they never had any vehicles in the area.

I have now had a reply from the incident manager, not the CEO. He tells me C&S have inspected the van (WHY?). This is looking like the RAC want to shift the blame. I have replied that I do not want to be caught up in a denial of liabily argument, and if the RAC wont accept liability I will have to resort to legal action. Oh and C&S, I've shown you mine, now you show me yours..... Interesting! At least if it all goes pear shaped and the RAC won't accept liability, you already have quite a bit of newspaper coverage from which you can approach the papers again with the "continuing saga". I am sure the negative publicity will be far more costly to the RAC than having to cough for your repairs, and depending how it unfolds they may need a gentle reminder of this

Well the gloves are off.
"At this stage it is not possible to accept any liability in the matter as I am not in receipt of all of the facts. Without seeing the report of the garage I cannot confirm what the time frame for repairs will be or the extent of them. Unfortunately, it would not be possible for us to arrange for a replacement van at this stage and I understand you have previously confirmed the use of an alternative. As a gesture of goodwill at this stage, without any admission of liability, I am willing to reimburse the cost of 3 days van hire or a maximum of £60.00 per day to the total of £180.00 subject to receipts being provided."
wrong answer. Spoke to a journo and this will be front page next week

Spoke to the journalist today, giving a full interview on Monday and passing over my Engineers report on the van, complete with my seldom used letters FIMechE and BsEng

It just goes to show that a so called public service provider still tries to rip off the public, you pay your money every year and they provide a service for that money, but if anything goes wrong they don't want to accept responsibility. Now, I pay my vehicle insurance " just in case ", accidents can and do happen, I really hope the RAC have insurance, I'm sure they are covered for just such a claim as this is what they do, repair or recover vehicles. On their own website ( rac.co.uk ), there is a section titled RAC in the media, it reads.."No one knows more about motoring than the RAC. Throughout our history and right up to the present day we've both championed the rights of drivers and done everything we can to make lives easy for them." Under this is a "Find out more" link, funnily enough this comes up as "Page not found" mmmm I wonder why ! Good luck with getting justice with this bunch Fred, hopefully a name and shame article in the papers will make them come to their senses and stop them ripping off other members in the future. PS remember to mention " classic mark 2 Ford Transit " and maybe throw in an " as seen on TV " just for good measure when you speak to the journalist.

Seems the recovery truck in question has been written off As far as i can see that means that the truck was in an unfit state for the road or had been overloaded, both grounds for legal action
