Well after last years effort of splashing the cash, I thought I should be good for a good while, sadly i'm wrong Was perfect then dropped it down a gear and its only running on 2 or 3 cylinders and making a hell of a row under load. Valve clearances have clearance, all valves moving, no broken valve springs, cam belt is fine, dizzy is set to where it should be, no smoke from the exhaust. On the plus side being a pinto it did manage to get me 15 miles back home, but running a bit warmer than normal - I was going to put a new stat in it with the cold weather as it been taking forever to warm up. Anybody want to put a bet on either a headgasket, dropped valve seat or broken ring? Compression test to follow shortly.

I was about to place $5 on head gasket! At least it's a relatively easy and cheap fix. I am feeling your pain at the moment, my Mondeo ST220 just haemorrhaged yesterday, spewing a muddy mix of oil and water out one of the rad hoses! Managed to drive it home, but it wasn't that happy about it. I am hoping it is just the oil cooler/heat exchanger, and not something more serious. Guess I will be driving the Sundowner to work today!

Splash out and get a Cometic gasket Does anywhere local keep them in stock? conrod that's the duratec V6 in the ST220 isn't it? I think I might just have been wishing for the simplicity of a pinto or a nice falcon 6....

I think I might just have been wishing for the simplicity of a pinto or a nice falcon 6.... yep Duratec 3.0. High kms, water pump failed a couple of months ago, I didn't realise it and drove for 20kms with no pump and pretty much no water after hose burst! Absolutely cooking when I stopped. Replaced pump, and all was okay! I think the oil cooler/heat exchanger has failed now. But seems to be a very tough engine. Although I will be driving the Transit with 4.1 Falcon six to work tomorrow

I always used the Felpro head gasket on my 2.1 and never had problems but not sure if ok on a standard bore. my then engine builder said that you could not go wrong with a genuine Ford one

Normal service is resumed, would have been done yesterday but I had kids birthday stuff to do!!! Fitted up the twin weber and realised I need a manual choke conversion and a couple of gaskets so put the tiny teeny one back on. Now up and running but the exhaust manifold as blowing slightly so will put a smear of goo on it when I get a moment.
I've put the cam timing back as it was and always has been, however consulting the ford manual I'm supposed to have an O and T mark long with the notches on the front pulley, any suggestions on alternative timing marks? Obviously got the normal one on the cam pulley and dizzy drive points to the notch at number one, am wondering if it's one tooth out on the crank timing?
