I thought I had better give a bit more of the story so far...so at the meet Mutts kindly tried a couple of things (including replacing the alternator twice) to fix the no battery light. With the whiff of defeat he sent me home with the instructions don't stall, don't stop, don't turn on your lights. So stopped for petrol, drove through sleet and darkness until home...very sad. Had the mvm pop over to take a look and while waiting for him thought...I know I can find this...by the time he arrived I had finished the ignition system...and not in a good way. Replacing the coil, ordering a couple of ignition modules, brought a telephone cable tester (£8 bargain e bay) I found a broken wire about 5cm away from the alternator. Also discovered heat shrink cable connectors...they're soooo cool!! If you're still using plastic clips, check them out! Then still had issues but chatted over with Mutts today and found a new home for the earth cable. Don't judge me, it's all learning for me so there is quite a bit of trial and error. This is sometimes mistaken for messing, I try and chat these things over with experts before I try Puk has an old circular switch on the leisure battery. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it has to be set to on whilst travelling to ensure charging although I'm not convinced and need to do further research All in all puks had a new ignition system and battery now (new ht leads into the works) so all good. All this is being done to take the kids to the zip wire in Wales at Easter...very excited!!

Sounds like good progress. Why would you turn off the leisure battery when driving? How else would the charge get in it? Magic?

If its the type of switch i'm thinking off it isolates the leisure battery from the starting battery whilst parked up so you can't accidentally run both of them flat. There will be one setting for driving about (to charge it up) and another for camping. It would be less to go wrong/ forget about if you (or Muttley) fitted a modern split charge system though

Aha, thanks DR, yes that would make sense. I've always wondered why the internal lights work regardless of the setting (yes probably more than 15 seconds thought should have solved it) so "off" must be the setting when parked up...then on to charge. So it's not a battery switch for the leisure battery, it's for the engine battery. Now I feel some signage coming on!! I'm not sure a modern split charge relay is in the current puk coffers

It's a bit pricy for a heavy duty relay and some fuses, you could salvage most of it from a modern on the way to the frag yard. Just trigger the relay from the oil pressure sender so it only charges while the engine is running.
