Fitted a "durite"split charger into my van approx 2 yrs ago,its worked perfectly, was also very simple to install, mines got 110amp lesure battery on relay, standard van batt and alternator, never had problem with the charge of either battery. Fitted relay under dash, get reasuring click after turning ignition off to tell its working when voltage drops, reasuring that 2nd batts disconnected. Would recommend over cheaper(lower amp)relays avaliable. (2nd batts used for fridge(when cowboy camping),lights, invertor etc, power led meters never dropped under two bars(5max),back to top after 1 hrs driving)
edit: originally fitted a cheaper split charge relay, cost me a lesure battery! Not cheaper!

I have to say that this setup has never let me down, but (stealing BITs line which I have now claimed as my own) I don't really cowboy camp as I can't get enough power to run a tv and feel much safer on sites with curl or the kids I like the idea though and will explore further

Cowboy camp, is that one of the village people?
Is PUK wired up with a zig unit to charge the leisure battery when you are on mains hook up? The only thing we use the mains for in our caravan is the fridge as it gets through a fair bit of gas if we run it on that and it'll flatten a 12v in no time at all. I have to say we've got a lidl 12v cool box which doesn't seem to draw that much power and works well. You can manage without TV, honestly....

Tee hee, I think you're thinking navy camp!! I'm quite happy without TV but I'm not the one requiring it...favourite site is hillend in Wales, the kids love it, no hookup, no signals, they feel really down to earth when we're there, perfect bonding I think we managed 3.8 days last time but they always want to go back. Yes we have a zig unit for hook up...and a cigi lighter fridge from the old tenting days

Used "cowboy camping"as term for out on the range on your lonesome, agree cowboy camp does have a dubious ring to it,better be careful how i put things,in a fire van and cowboying it be read wrong, lucky im not working under power lines in the red indian state..

Well, it's a gizmo to ensure that the right charge is provided for each battery, specifically designed for vehicles that run two batteries, one start battery and one leisure battery.
But that doesn't matter right now.
